The University of the Philippines fell to their third straight loss against the resurgent Far Eastern University, 25-19, 25-18, 25-17, Wednesday in the UAAP Season 76 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
Mary Palma and Bernadette Pons provided the headaches for UP as they spearheaded FEU’s offense with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Samantha Dawson also added 12 points for the Lady Tamaraws, who bounced back from a loss at the hands of the Ateneo Lady Eagles.
Skipper Angeli Araneta led way with 10 points for the Lady Maroons, while Katherine Bersola contributed eight points, including six from attacks.
The first set proved to be an acid test for the Maroons as they failed to grab a taste of the lead all throughout the set en route to a 25-19 set win for FEU.
The second set saw the Maroons resurged, zooming to a 3-0 lead early on before engaging the Tamaraws in a see-saw battle.
However, the Morayta-based squad overpowered the gallant efforts of UP with the unstoppable combination of Palma and Pons, who both fueled an upsurge at crunchtime to grab another set.
The sustained fighting form of FEU kept them ahead in the third canto leading to a sweep.
UP remained winless after three outings while FEU improved to a 2-1 win-loss slate.
The Maroons will next face defending champion De La Salle University on Sunday, December 15, 2 pm at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
