The University of the Philippines (UP) Maroons fall to the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Eagles, 1-0, in a highly anticipated rematch of Season 78’s football final, Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Despite a strong first half from defending champions UP, the Katipunan booters avenged last year’s 4-1 defeat late in the match.
UP had more than a few decent attempts at a goal. Sophomore King Miyagi’s shot was the closest, drifting wide in the 66-minute mark.
However, a goal from Blue Eagle rookie Lorenzo Ceniza in the second half sealed the deal for Ateneo.
The loss snapped a three game winning streak for UP as they remain in third place with 10 points and a 3-1-1 record.
Ateneo claims their sixth straight win and stays in the top spot, now six points away from undefeated second seed Far Eastern University Tamaraws.
The Maroon booters look to bounce back against the FEU Tamaraws on March 2 at 6 p.m. at the Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Ateneo.
